THE ROSETTA STONE
was found by the soldiers of Napoleon in 1799 in Egypt near a city called Roseta (Rashid). It originated in the year 196 bc and contains a decree written in 3 languages: Hieroglyphs, Demotic, and Greek. This stone enabled the French scientist Jean Francois Champollion (1790 - 1832) to decipher the hieroglyphs.
The Rosetta Stone is kept in the British Museum in London.
